Buying Options for the King Size Mattress

Buying a new bed can be a big expense, and this is especially true when buying a king size mattress. King size mattresses offer the ultimate sleeping experience, even for couples. However, special considerations must be taken when purchasing such a large mattress.

Unless you are replacing an old king size mattress, it is essential to makes some measurements first. Not all homes or apartments can accommodate such a large bed. Measure hallways, doorways, and rooms first. Pay special attention to turns and staircases, because sometimes it is impossible to move a king size mattress through them.

Some rooms are too small to comfortably accommodate a king size bed. One helpful method is to mark the area of a potential mattress with tape. This allows you to see how much space you will have remaining in the room after upgrading your mattress. Consider whether you’ll have room to access dresser drawers and closet doors. Nothing is worse than realizing your new mattress won’t work after it has been delivered!

What Size of King Mattress to Buy?

Most king mattresses measure 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. This is the standard size for king beds, and it is sometimes referred to as the Eastern King. The standard king is ideal for most couples because it provides ample width. It is roughly equivalent to two twin mattresses side by side.

The California King gives up a little width for additional length. It measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long. The California King is the best choice for taller individuals. Generally, those taller than six feet will find the California King more comfortable than the standard king.

Making a King from Two Twin Mattresses

Two twins together are roughly the same size as a king size mattress. Pairing twin mattresses provides a solution to those who have tight turns in hallways or stairwells that prevent the passage of a king size mattress. In addition, many people have extra twin mattresses, so this can be a cost effective way to sleep on a king size bed.

When using this method, XL twins are ideal because they are 80 inches in length. Be sure to use two twins of the same depth. A twin bed bridge can be used to fill the gap between mattresses. Add a mattress cover and you’ll have a seamless top for sleeping.

A king split frame is perfect for two twin mattresses, however it is also possible to use two twin frames. If using two twin frames, then they should be strapped or bolted together to increase stability and safety.

No matter the king size mattress you choose, you’ll enjoy a luxurious sleep that smaller mattresses simply can’t provide. A quality king size mattress should last almost a decade, however high-end foam mattresses can last twice as long, so your new mattress is a worthwhile investment. Enjoy!
